Hi everyone, today I’m going to talk about some important definitions in Magento world.

Today I’m going to talk about some important definitions in Magento world.

Relationship between Order Shipment and Package
Relationship between Order Shipment and Package

They are ORDER, SHIPMENT and PACKAGE.

In short, one ORDER can have multiple SHIPMENTS, and one SHIPMENT can have multiple PACKAGES.

As we already know, ORDER is the thing that customer go to your website, choose some products, and then they place it. So basically, ORDER is the connection between you and your customers.

And then there is the fulfillment process. It’s the process that happens from when order is placed until when order is shipped to customer completely.

Most of the time, you need a shipping carrier to transfer product from your warehouse to customer’s address. So how can you keep track of the packages that you sent to shipping carrier? They will provide you something called SHIPPING LABEL, that contains a tracking number of your package. You will print this document and place it on the outside of your package. The carrier will use the SHIPPING LABEL to manage your package in their internal system. You will be provided a link to track this package (for example, http://www.fedex.com/track/3918239). You should give this link to your customers, so they can see the shipping process. Each SHIPPING LABEL will be linked with one PACKAGE.

And the last thing is SHIPMENT. You will wonder why they need something called SHIPMENT? When ORDER is interaction between owner store with customer, and PACKAGE is interaction between owner store and shipping carrier? Personally, I think the SHIPMENT is something that Magento uses to manage order internally, which means only the store owner and staffs need to knows about it.

If you think that I’m missing anything, feel free to comment.

Thanks. See you next time!
